The Science Complex
A Place of Discovery

The Ernest E. Tschannen Science Complex will help students gain the knowledge to become some of the 21st century’s finest scientists when it opens in fall 2019. These students are future leaders who will tackle worldwide challenges such as climate change and health aging – and issues we can’t yet imagine. The state-of-the-art complex will enhance the learning and research underway at Sacramento State, furthering our ability to increase access to hands-on research experiences for science students, provide greater course access and a faster path to a degree, foster community engagement through the Planetarium and Observatory, and more.

A modern life-and-molecular science building, the Tschannen Science Complex will be a five-story, 95,000 square foot, LEED Gold certified structure with stunning views of the American River and Guy West Bridge. It will provide faculty and students with the tools they need to be trailblazers in science and technology, featuring:

  • A Planetarium with a digitally immersive environment will be used by students, school children and the public
  • An observatory with a retractable roof and two telescopes, this companion to the planetarium will offer prime viewing of the night sky
  • Biological sciences and chemistry labs – ten research labs and twenty teaching laboratories
  • Two 120-student general education classrooms
